Cool disc.īack in December of 1969 my mother's Chrisstmas present was a copy of the DGG recording of Sibelius tone poems featuring the Berlin Philharmonic led by Herbert von Karajan. The Gibson SNO Sibelius disc which has 6,3,7 all on one disc is a great place to check these out. I like this one in a slower tempo, and Gibson does that. Simon captures the level of dark intensity justly.that of a bleak, limitless horizon, perhaps with a dying red sunset falling into the ice.Īlexander Gibson, Scottish National Orchestra for #3. It should all be on the table.as similar to an explosion as a group of cellos/basses can approximate - bleak and unremitting. I think the most important part of theĤth is the opening pages. I feel like this conductor and orchestra has lived and breathed this work all their lives (which they have) and this might be most important in the 6th. Vanska's tempo and phrasing is perfect.this is where most others miss the boat. This version (and I have about 10) I think best captures and right mood and feeling of the symphony - it should not be too icy and asture.that's not what it's about. I like the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä for #6. In order, my favorites are Symphony 6, 4, and 3. Click to expand.nice thread.my favorites are not everyone's usual mainstream choices and are not normally programmed in the concert halls, which means when I see them being performed within 200 miles I usually have to get there.
